Keith will discuss aspects of safety, equipment, how to set up a proper paint area, decals and application, graphics, masking, airbrushing, and a general overview of the painting process.

So You Want to Build Bikes? | Jeff Buchholz, Sputnik Tool
A brief discussion on what is involved in setting up a shop and the process of building bikes.
We will talk about the basic tools and skills needed to start building bikes followed by a question and answer period where specific topics can be addressed.
Jeff Buchholz is a machinist and frame builder who loves bikes. I have worked for over 17 years in the frame building business, The last 10 years focusing primarily on building tools for frame builders. I come at the process of frame building with the idea that frame building should be fun and if it isn't fun you are doing something wrong.

BikeCAD | Brent Curry, The Bicycle Forest
Brent will discuss how frame builders and bicycle fit specialists can use BikeCAD to streamline their processes and collaborate with their customers. Brent will also present the latest release of BikeCAD. He'll describe the new features of BikeCAD v6.0 and encourage audience discussion of other enhancements for future releases.
Before founding the Bicycle Forest, Brent gained experience in the bicycle industry through internships served while earning a degree in mechanical engineering. Brent has worked at Vitus Bicycles in France, Syncros Applied Technology in Vancouver, BC, Southcott Pty in Australia and Dekerf Cycle Innovations in Vancouver, BC. Besides developing BikeCAD, Brent also builds unique cycles including the
famous Couchbike which he rode over 500km across Maritime Canada.

Titanium Explained | Kent Eriksen, Kent Eriksen Cycles
Kent Eriksen, veteran frame builder, mountain bike hall of famer and elite bike racer will discuss his history, experience and expertise leading him to be among the worlds best titanium bicycle frame builders.
Kent will discuss his progression from bike mechanic to the origin of mountain biking and on to founding both Moots Cycles and Kent Eriksen Cycles. Be prepared for an entertaining account his voyage with titanium and frame building including frame fabrication, titanium properties and uses, insider information and real-life experiences straight from Kent himself.

Fit to Finish: Full Service Bicycle Shops | Drew Guldalian, Wissahickon Cyclery
A full service bicycle shop which includes tailor made bicycles is nothing new. Taking a page from the European model, Engin Cycles builder Drew Guldalian expanded his now 14-year-old retail bicycle shop by beginning to sell made-in-house bicycles in 2006. This seminar explains what it takes for a bicycle retail establishment to include custom framebuilding with its standard retail sales, and how this can make for an ideal full service customer relationship. A full service shop provides the ability to offer a top to bottom made to measure bicycle that gets sold through the retail store.
Drew Guldalian incorporated Wissahickon Cyclery Inc., an urban bicycle shop emphasizing custom bicycles, in 1995 at the age of 23. In 2005, Drew decided it was time to take his knowledge of bicycles to the next level and build his own bikes. He signed up for UBI to get an intro into fabricating with metal, and in 2006 started setting up shop for Engin Cycles and built 35 bikes the first year using his employees and well-established client base as beta-testers. He is now attending his third NAHBS and won best off-road at last year's NAHBS in Portland, OR.

Metals : Strength vs. Stiffness - why does it matter? | Keith Noronha, Reynolds Technology, Ltd. UK
Reynolds have developed a number of metals for use in the bike industry and frequently get asked how stronger materials can be used to make lighter frames. In our seminar, we will cover the basic concepts used by designers and highlight possible advantages and limitations. This is will followed by a Q&A session.
Keith led the management buy-out of Reynolds Technology Ltd in 2000, part of a long history for the company that invented tube "butting" in 1898 and still produces high-end tubing in its Birmingham, UK factory. RTL has developed a number of innovative metals including butted seamless 6-4 titanium and now the Maraging "953" stainless steel tubeset.

Screen Specialty Shop is proud to host a NAHBS Seminar for the second year. This year's seminar will deal with the possibilities and pit falls of branding your frames. This will be a hands on seminar dealing with the mounting process of most types of decals that could be used in the branding of your frames. We will discuss both wet paint and powder.

Aerodynamic Bicycle Wheel Technology | Josh Poertner, Zipp Speed Weaponry
Josh has been with Zipp since 2000. As Zipp's design engineer he has been the design influence behind many of Zipp's advances not only in carbon bicycle wheel construction, but in the aerodynamic advances in bicycle wheels. In 2008 Josh became the Technical Director of Zipp.

Richard Schwinn has had a long and varied history in the bicycle business, starting out as a mechanic in high school and working all around Schwinn Bicycle Company's Chicago factory, including a stint building Schwinn's elite Paramounts in the early 70's. After a period outside the bicycle industry, Richard returned to Schwinn in the late 1980's eventually heading up Schwinn's manufacturing division. When Schwinn was sold in 1993, he and Marc Muller started Waterford Precision Cycles, operating out of the old Schwinn Paramount factory in Waterford, Wisconsin. Richard is Fit Kit Level III certified.

Track Bikes A-Z | Don Walker, Don Walker Cycles
Don will explain what makes a good track bike versus a great track bike, according to geometry, fit and the rider's home track. Tubing selection and other equipment will be covered as well.
